Today, I am going to tell you a very interesting and important thing: Generative AI and Fairness. “What is the biggest challenge in the world?” Or say, “Which is one challenge in ensuring fairness in generative AI?”

Now see, AI, i.e., Artificial Intelligence, is made to make our work easier – but is it equally easy for everyone?  That is the question! Let us understand it in simple language.

Let us first understand the meaning of Generative AI…

Let's say you say to ChatGPT, “Draw a cute poem,” or to Midjourney, “Draw a picture of a 90s-style action figure.” Creating a poem or image from text is called Generative AIThis technology was given to you, prompt or create new content based on instructions, such as text, images, audio, video, etc.

But now comes the real question...

Does this AI work equally for everyone?

Meaning, is it equally fair and fair for an Indian user, a Western user, a woman, an elderly person, an LGBTQ person?

No way.

And this is the biggest challenge – Bias

No matter how smart AI is, it learns only from humans. And we humans – whether we want to or not – have biases. That means there are inclinations.

Now, if the data you feed to AI is itself biased, like:

  • Most of the pictures are of people,

  • Women are shown in weak or side roles in the text,

  • More importance has been given to one language or culture,

So, imagine what that AI will learn?

Where does bias come from?

To train an AI which given training data, which is taken from real world text, images, videos, etc. Now just think:

  • Most of the content on the Internet is in English.

  • Many websites are of Western culture.

  • Stereotypes are often depicted in pop culture, like that girls are only pretty or that African people are dangerous.

AI learns from that. And then the same bias becomes visible in his generation also.

A user once asked an AI image generator to “draw a photo of a CEO.”
The AI showed mostly pictures of white men.
Now, is it that women or Asian people can't be CEOs?

But in the data that AI received, most of the examples were of white men only.

Therefore, determining AI fairness is not so easy.

Why is it difficult to deal with bias?

  1. The data itself is biased – Old data is full of human-made biases.

  2. AI itself does not understand what is right – it just catches patterns.

  3. There is no universal definition of fairness – Every culture and context is different.

  4. Some biases are introduced intentionally, For political or commercial purposes.

So, is there any solution to this?

  • If a hiring algorithm rejects a candidate, a human takes the final call.

This reduces the chances of taking unfair decisions.

4. Explainable AI (XAI)

What did AI think, how did it think – it seemed like a black-box till today.
But now the trend is to make AI “talkable”.

Explainable AI means – when a model gives some output, it should also explain why it did so.

For example, if the AI gave a low score to a woman, the user could ask, “Why?”
And the AI answers – “Because of this, based on this data.”

This increases transparency and brings accountability.

Now let's talk about good initiatives, because just counting problems is not enough.

Now it wouldn't be right to just leave it to the companies, would it?
If we create or use AI, we also have some responsibility.

Developers should:

  • curate, clean those datasets

  • Use fairness testing tools

  • Design your models ethically

Users should:

  • Don't blindly trust AI

  • If you see wrong bias, please give feedback.

  • And write inclusive prompts — like “a group of happy people of different cultures”

What does the future say?

AI is no longer a toy — it's going to be in every part of our lives.
From education to healthcare, entertainment to law, all places

So if we don't pay attention to fairness and bias today, these systems could cause even bigger harm tomorrow.

But the good thing is that people are becoming aware, research is being done, and ethics are being talked about.
