Did you know that “what is AI winter” is a frequently asked question in the technology world? As exciting as the journey of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been, it has also had its ups and downs. AI Winter refers to a period when both interest and investment in research and development of Artificial Intelligence declines drastically because expected results are not achieved. This period has occurred several times in the history of computer science, when people feel that AI is not living up to its promises.
During an AI Winter, companies and governments reduce funding for AI projects, hindering research, and many initiatives are shut down. The AI industry experienced two major AI Winters: between 1970-1980 and then between 1987-1993. These reasons included technological limitations, a lack of data, tremendous overhype (media overhyping), and expensive hardware.
Nevertheless, after each AI Winter, AI rebounded rapidly due to the development of new technologies and improvements in data processing. In particular, machine learning, rapidly increasing computing power, and internet data made AI relevant again, making it a vital part of our lives today.
