Maximizing Reach: Google Sends Users Directly to Publisher-Hosted AMP Pages

Google Changes How It Connects Users to AMP Pages

Google has recently made an update to its process of connecting users to Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) directly from Search. Previously, users were directed to cached pages displayed in an AMP viewer, but now they will be taken directly to the publisher-hosted AMP pages.

A spokesperson from Google informed Search Engine Land about this change, stating, "Starting today, we are updating how we connect users to AMP pages from Search, taking them directly to the AMP host pages."

This update does not affect the ranking of AMP pages. Google emphasizes that AMP content will continue to rank similarly to regular webpages. However, this new approach aims to simplify the creation and maintenance of AMP pages for publishers. According to Google, "AMP content will continue to rank just like any other webpage, and this change will reduce maintenance efforts for publishers creating AMP content."

No Change in Ranking: Google assures that the ranking of AMP pages in Google Search remains consistent. The serving and ranking of AMP content in Google Search and Google Discover will not be altered due to this update, as confirmed by Google.

Reasons for the Change: Google explains that this modification is intended to streamline analytics management and tracking for publishers. By directing users to publisher-hosted AMP pages, publishers will find it easier to create and maintain AMP content going forward.

Google reaffirms its commitment to supporting the open-source AMPhtml format and has detailed information regarding this update available here.

Despite the extensive use of AMP in the past, it has not received preferential treatment in Google's top stories section for a while now. In fact, some sites, like Search Engine Land, disabled AMP in 2021, highlighting the diminishing prominence of AMP pages.

While it has been a while since we discussed AMP, this recent change is significant and warrants documentation to stay informed about evolving digital trends.
