"From European Brands to Sustainable Startup: Plant Dyes in Fashion"

A Sustainable Fashion Journey: From Internship to Impact
In 2002, Sowmya, a student at NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology), embarked on an internship that would alter the course of her life forever. Initially unsure of what to expect, she chose to intern at a studio in the unique township of Auroville, Tamil Nadu. Auroville, characterized by its emphasis on ecology and spirituality, captivated Sowmya from the beginning. Reflecting on her experience, she expressed how the immediate connection she felt with the town set the stage for her future endeavors.
Fast forward to 2026, after a 20-year journey in the fashion industry, Sowmya established her sustainable fashion brand, Hibiscus Heroes, in 2020. Through Hibiscus Heroes, she is challenging conventional fashion norms, demonstrating that style can coexist harmoniously with sustainability.
A Transformational Experience in Auroville
Following her impactful internship, Sowmya returned to Bengaluru for her final year of studies. However, the allure of Auroville lingered in her heart. The town's innovative practices in various fields such as healthcare, education, and architecture resonated deeply with her. Eventually, Sowmya found herself drawn back to Auroville after graduation, immersing herself in the town's lifestyle while contributing to the local community. It was during this period that she also met her future husband, adding another layer of serendipity to her story.
Despite a successful corporate career stint with renowned brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Sowmya's growing awareness of the environmental impact of fast fashion prompted a significant shift in her perspective. In 2013, she made the decision to return to South India to explore sustainable fashion practices firsthand.
A Commitment to Sustainable Fashion
Settling in Auroville in 2017, Sowmya embarked on a profound journey towards launching Hibiscus Heroes. Embracing the ethos of sustainable fashion, Sowmya delved into the intricate world of natural dyes and plant-based materials. Witnessing firsthand the environmental degradation caused by conventional fashion practices, she was determined to create a brand that prioritized eco-conscious production processes.
By 2020, Hibiscus Heroes emerged as a beacon of sustainable fashion, offering a range of products made from eco-friendly materials. Sowmya's innovative approach led her to explore alternatives to traditional fabrics, such as handloom cotton, and introduce cellulose wood-based textiles like lyocell and modals to create a balanced product line.
Innovating for a Greener Future
Despite facing initial challenges, including skepticism from artisans about novel fabrics, Sowmya remained steadfast in her commitment to sustainability. Through trial and experimentation, she successfully developed a vibrant color palette using plant-based dyes sourced from local flora. The brand's offerings, including products dyed with materials like wedelia plant, annatto seeds, and madder roots, are a testament to Hibiscus Heroes' dedication to environmental preservation.
Today, managed by a dedicated team of 5 individuals, Hibiscus Heroes continues to receive appreciation and support from across India, with an impressive average of 175 orders per month. Sowmya's journey exemplifies the power of individual action in driving meaningful change within the fashion industry.
As Sowmya reflects on the colorful evolution of her brand and the transformative phases of her professional trajectory, she remains steadfast in her belief that Hibiscus Heroes is paving the way for a more sustainable and conscientious approach to fashion.
