"Empowering Mothers & Daughters: Global Flavours for Indian Kitchens"

Exploring Global Flavors at Home with Chilzo: A Culinary Journey
Imagine transforming your everyday meals into an adventure for your taste buds, experiencing diverse global flavors without leaving your kitchen. This is the mission of Chilzo, a pioneering startup based in Mumbai, founded in 2022 by sisters Dea and Ojasvi Sharma, alongside their mother, Hema. Chilzo aims to introduce the authentic tastes and aromas of various international cuisines to Indian households.
Specializing in sauces and condiments, Chilzo caters to a wide audience, offering a range of flavors from Italian, African, Mexican, to Chinese culinary traditions. With a customer base of around 7,000 monthly patrons, predominantly from Delhi, Mumbai, and southern India, Chilzo has successfully tapped into the increasing demand for global gastronomy among Indian consumers.
Culinary Creativity Amidst Adversity
Dea, an alumna of Drexel University, kickstarted Chilzo after a stint at a marketing firm in Philadelphia exposed her to diverse culinary experiences across the globe. The inception of Chilzo traces back to the lockdown of March 2019, when Dea returned to India, prompting her and her sister, Ojasvi, to experiment with home cooking, yearning for more exciting meals than just the usual fare.
Driven by a passion for exploring traditional cooking techniques, the sisters delved into creating authentic pasta sauces like arrabbiata and marinara, drawing inspiration from their travels and family recipes. Their experimentation led to the birth of Chilzo, starting with sharing their creations with friends and family, which eventually evolved into a full-fledged business.
From Home Kitchen to Business Empire
Following a year of research and dedication, Chilzo transformed from a modest home-based project into a thriving business based out of Mumbai, employing 30 individuals. Despite their lack of prior experience in the food industry, the Sharmas navigated the complexities of establishing and growing a business, from understanding distribution channels to product shelf life.
Embracing authenticity in their culinary offerings, Chilzo ensures that each product is prepared using traditional methods native to its country of origin. For instance, the Italian sauces undergo slow cooking practices with no added water or sugar, staying true to the diabetic-friendly and pure essence of the recipes.
“We import most of our ingredients like parmesan cheese from other countries,” Dea mentions, hinting at future plans to introduce Mexican seasonings into their product line.
Despite their success, one ongoing challenge for Chilzo remains in educating consumers on the versatility of their products. To address this, they provide usage guidance on their website, ensuring customers can fully appreciate the flavors they bring to the table.
For the Sharmas, Chilzo is more than a business venture; it symbolizes a shared passion for food and family bonding. Bringing the world's flavors to Indian kitchens, Chilzo continues to innovate and inspire culinary explorations right at home.
