Revolutionizing Toy Industry: Toy Trunk's Innovative Approach

Toy Trunk, a brainchild of architects Priyanka Mangaonkar-Vaiude and Ajay Vaidya, is redefining the concept of toys for children aged 0 to 8. Their handcrafted toys are meticulously designed based on in-depth research into children's motor and cognitive development. What sets Toy Trunk apart is not just the design process but also their commitment to using non-toxic and sustainable materials like wood and lac, collaborating with traditional artisans for production.

The Vision Behind Toy Trunk

Priyanka emphasizes the critical role early childhood experiences play in shaping a child's brain development and ability to learn, socialize, and handle daily challenges. The duo's vision for Toy Trunk is to educate parents about the pivotal role toys play in a child's overall development journey.

With a background in architecture and a keen eye for holistic learning tools, Priyanka drew inspiration from her own parenting struggles during the COVID-19 lockdown. Witnessing her son's screen addiction sparked a deep dive into child development theories, leading to the realization that appropriate toys are vital for engaging and educating children effectively.

Ajay, with his expertise in urban design and human ergonomics, observed the negative impact of increased screen time on children's engagement levels. This shared concern and passion for off-screen learning experiences culminated in the inception of Toy Trunk, which officially launched in April 2021.

Crafting Developmental Toys through Research

Understanding that a significant portion of brain development occurs before the age of eight, Toy Trunk focuses on providing tools that offer enriching experiences during this crucial phase. Some standout toys in their collection include:

  • A pretend play kitchen set designed to enhance social skills, language capabilities, and problem-solving abilities in children.
  • Threading shapes and lacing bead toys that aid in developing hand-eye coordination and motor skills essential for early writing.
  • Traditional Indian wooden toys like the peacock wobbler, promoting infant development through vibrant colors and dynamic movements.
  • Rattles redesigned for newborns, ensuring safe and stimulating auditory experiences for early sensory development.

Each toy at Toy Trunk is crafted with sustainability at its core, using natural materials like wood and fabric to steer clear of chemical toxins found in conventional plastic toys. The handcrafted appeal of wooden textures not only engages children but also fosters sensory exploration and fine motor skill development.

Empowering Artisans and Sustaining Traditional Crafts

By collaborating with artisans from traditional Indian toy clusters like Sawantwadi and Channapatna, Priyanka and Ajay aim to revitalize age-old craft practices. These artisans, skilled in lacquerware and woodcraft, produce toys using eco-friendly materials and techniques passed down through generations.

Master craftsman B Venkatesh from Channapatna exemplifies the artisanal dedication to preserving heritage crafts. Through partnerships with artisans like Venkatesh, Toy Trunk not only supports sustainable toy-making but also ensures the continuation of cultural craft traditions.

Business Model and Future Outlook

Toy Trunk operates on a direct-to-consumer model, retailing products online and through curated marketplaces. Their collaboration with master craftsmen on a per-order basis streamlines design communication and material management, fostering a symbiotic relationship with traditional artisans.

As a bootstrapped venture, Toy Trunk aims to expand its product range and market presence, targeting a turnover of Rs 1.5 crore by year-end. Looking ahead, the founders envision scaling their impact through collaborations, sustainable practices, and a commitment to enriching India's toy craft clusters.
