The Power of AI Citations: Boosting Listicles, Articles & Product Pages

Understanding AI Search Citations: Content Formats Driving Visibility
Recent research from Wix Studio AI Search Lab has shed light on the significant impact of content formats on AI search citations. By analyzing 75,000 AI answers and over 1 million citations from major LLMs such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity, the study revealed interesting trends that can shape digital content strategies in 2026.
The Dominance of Listicles, Articles, and Product Pages
The findings show that a small set of formats play a critical role in driving over half of all AI mentions. Listicles emerged as the top performer, leading at 21.9% of citations, closely followed by articles at 16.7% and product pages at 13.7%. Collectively, these three formats accounted for 52% of all AI citations.
- Articles proved to be dominant in addressing informational queries, cited 2.7 times more than other formats.
- Listicles excelled in capturing commercial intent, securing 40% of citations, nearly double the performance of any other type.
The Significance of Query Intent
Why intent wins: The study highlighted that query intent, rather than industry or model, significantly influences the likelihood of content being cited by AI. This trend remained consistent across various industries, ranging from SaaS to health.
- Informational queries predominantly cited articles (45.5%) and listicles (21.7%).
- Commercial queries were most inclined towards listicles (40.9%).
- Transactional and navigational queries showed a preference for product and category pages, collectively accounting for around 40% of citations.
Aligning Content Formats with User Intent
Why we care: The research underscores the importance of aligning content types with user goals rather than solely focusing on creating more content. Articles serve to educate, listicles facilitate comparison, and product pages drive conversions. By matching content format with user intent, businesses can potentially enhance their AI citations and improve visibility online.
Not all listicles perform equally: Third-party listicles significantly outperformed self-promotional lists in professional services, suggesting a preference among LLMs for impartial, editorial comparisons over brand-centered rankings.
Model Differences: While all models favored listicles, variations emerged thereafter.
- ChatGPT leaned towards articles and informational content.
- Google AI Mode exhibited a more balanced distribution across formats.
- Perplexity stood out with 17% of citations originating from platforms like Reddit and forums.
Industry Preferences in Content Formats
Industry patterns: Preferences for content formats exhibited slight variations across different verticals:
- SaaS and professional services demonstrated a higher inclination towards listicles.
- Health sector favored authoritative articles.
- Ecommerce spread citations across listicles, articles, and category pages.
- Home repair displayed a more even distribution across different formats.
